The research conducted by a group of scientists working at the University of Surrey and a company called Game Academy revealed that video games have a remarkable effect. The type of game the players played was a clear indication of what career prospects they had.

The research was conducted on the 800 most played games on Steam.
Scientists used Steam, the world’s most popular online gaming platform, for research. Acting on the most played 800 games, the experts reached the following striking results:
- IT professionals and IT engineers have gravitated more towards puzzle and platform games.
- The managers’ choice was RPG games.
- Other engineers preferred the strategy type.
- Women preferred single-player games more.
- The men’s favorites were shooter games.

As the lead author of the study, Dr. Anna-Stiina Wallinheimo said the research was very important for the employer. Mentioning that video games provide people with social skills, Wallinheimo stated that although it is not considered important in the recruitment processes, candidates who have also gained social skills thanks to video games can be much more useful.
“Universities should turn to games in career development”
Co-author of the study, Dr. Anesa Hosein also made statements on the subject. According to Hosein, educational institutions such as universities should resort to video games when providing career development training to students.
