Valve has been providing access to Steam via Android and iOS clients for over 10 years. However, in recent years, the Steam mobile application has not received much attention from the company. Not only does it look old, but its use has become a complete grind for many users. Some now keep the app on their phone just to take advantage of Steam Guard verification.

Valve will also be aware of this, that it has started working on a new version of the mobile application. In a blog post spotted by PC Gamer, the company announced that it has invited “invested Steam users” to beta test the redesigned Android and iOS client. “We rebuilt the app on a new framework and modernized the design,” said Valve, as they began testing the app.

The new Steam mobile offers smarter notifications, multi-account support, and a new way to log in to your Steam account, in addition to previously introduced features. Instead of entering your username, password and Steam Guard verification, you can now use a QR code to simplify the process. This is probably the most useful feature added by Valve.

The initial idea testers got about the new version of the app is that it’s a welcome improvement over its predecessor of the same app. While the new app has the usual flaws seen in beta software for now, such as slow performance and lots of bugs, it’s seen as a step forward. “The sooner we get your feedback on this product, the better,” Valve also told users. noted: “This is especially important when the app is used on a large number of different phones and devices.”

There is no clear date yet for when the redesigned app will reach the final version. However, the beta version is open to anyone who wants to participate.
