US-based technology giant Google and online music and podcast platform Spotify announced a collaboration in March 2022. Within the scope of this cooperation, users would be able to make Spotify Premium payments from within the application without connecting to the Google Play Store. This was a first in Google history. For the first time, users would be able to “bypass” the Google Play Store.
The collaboration, known as “billing according to user preference”, has now been implemented. In the statements made by Spotify, it was announced that the new billing system has started to be used around the world as part of the testing phase.

Spotify’s bypassing the Google Play Store means lower costs. From now on, Google will reduce the commission it receives from Spotify by 4 percent due to users paying Spotify directly. This can be an advantage for users. So much so that Spotify can offer its falling costs to users as a discount. However, it should be noted that this is only a possibility. Spotify may also choose to add the commission difference to its revenue rather than deducting it from prices.
We can say that the development has moved the Google Play Store and the App Store away from each other. Because both ecosystems used to offer a single invoicing method until now, but this has changed with Spotify.
