TikTok and the USA are facing lawsuits once again
TikTok faces US scrutiny. According to Reuters, Utah is currently suing TikTok. Indiana and Arkansas had previously discussed similar cases. The reason for the case is that TikTok is accused of harming children by allowing them to spend unhealthy time on the platform.
The possibility of TikTok being banned due to security concerns was first raised in 2020. But little happened on the subject during the following three years. Still, there are currently three separate states that aim to limit TikTok in some way, with Utah being the latest. So much so that he filed a lawsuit against TikTok for it.
Currently, the situation on TikTok varies from state to state. Last month, California aimed to enact a law to protect children when using the internet, but it was blocked by a federal judge. Now Utah is firing back at TikTok, claiming the app is exploiting children to control and monitor the app.
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said TikTok lied to children and their parents about the app being safe and that spending too much time on the platform had dire effects on their mental and physical health.
The lawsuit states that the social media platform uses “extremely powerful algorithms and manipulative design features, many of which mimic the features of slot machines.” The investigation initiated by the state continues. Utah is seeking civil penalties as well as an injunction that would prohibit TikTok from violating state laws when it comes to deceptive business practices.
