The U.S. Treasury and government officials schedule regular meetings to discuss the central bank digital currency.

The spread of cryptocurrencies brought the central bank digital currency (CBDC) to the agenda, with governments also getting involved. While CBDC is a new topic on the agenda, many countries are looking forward to the trial phase in this regard.

US Government Wants to Discuss CBDC More

Nellie Liang of the US treasury said there are plans for senior officials to meet “regularly” to discuss a potential CBDC. Liang said a CBDC can only be enacted with the support of Congress.

US Treasury, Federal Reserve and White House officials will begin to meet regularly to talk about a possible central bank digital currency, Nellie Liang, the undersecretary of the Treasury for domestic finance, said in a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington.

The Treasury-led CBDC working group will examine the issue further and complement the Fed’s ongoing digital dollar research. The Treasury made recommendations to the working group in one of its digital asset policy documents it released last September.

Liang emphasized that the working group did not signal a change in US policy regarding the digital dollar, and that the Fed is still in a leading research role.
