Lawmakers in the United States have proposed two new bipartisan bills that target transparency and innovation in AI.
On June 8, Democratic Senator Gary Peters and Republican Senators Mike Braun and James Lankford introduced the first bill that required the government to be transparent in its use of AI. This bill is intended to create a system for US government agencies to notify the public when they use artificial intelligence to interact with them, and for citizens to challenge any decision made by this technology.
UK and EU Officials Also Take Action
Republican Senator Mike Braun made statements about the new bill.
“The federal government needs to be proactive and transparent about its use of AI technology and ensure that decisions are not made without humans in the herd seat,” Braun said in a statement. The second bill was brought to the table by Democratic Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Warner and Republican Senator Todd Young to establish a formal Office of Global Competitiveness Analysis.
This new unit aims to help the US stay on top of AI development.
Commenting on the Global Competitiveness Analysis Office, Bennet said: “We cannot afford to lose our competitiveness in strategic technologies such as semiconductors, quantum computing and AI to our competitors like China.”
Regulations targeting AI technology have begun to appear in discussions among lawmakers around the world.
Earlier this week, UK officials stressed that AI models needed regulations similar to those applied to medicine and nuclear energy. That same day, another UK official warned that humanity would face a threat if these patterns were not brought under control within the next two years.
In addition, European lawmakers are in the process of completing the EU Artificial Intelligence Law, a comprehensive set of regulations for the development and dissemination of productive AI.
