In July, it was revealed that Microsoft would deliver augmented reality-based IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) devices to the US army. These products are based on Microsoft’s HoloLens technology and provide soldiers with additional features in various areas, especially situational awareness.

According to the information obtained, the US army has approved the second phase of the IVAS evaluation. It is not clear exactly what is meant by the second phase, but it is highly likely that Microsoft will start developing more of these HoloLens-based devices for the US military in the coming months.

The shared report states that 20 IVAS prototypes were used by a group of infantrymen in August. The IVASs were tested for “weapons compatibility, navigation tools, and mission planning studies,” according to the report. The test also evaluated the comfort and working levels of the headsets. In the next phase of the IVAS program, the US military is expected to work with Microsoft to make the headsets more affordable.

Tests will continue

Microsoft had previously signed a major 10-year contract to deliver such titles to the military. The contract was for 121,000 headsets and was worth $21.9 billion, but after Microsoft sent the first versions of AR headsets to the army in 2021, it was found that their use by soldiers in the field was cumbersome, non-functional and caused health problems.

Microsoft, on the other hand, identified the problems in the first versions and made some changes in the form factor of the headset by preparing advanced IVAS systems. Changes to the form factor include both cabling and comfort changes. According to reports, the next evaluation phase of the US army will last up to 18 months. Improvements can be made during this period. If all goes well, the US could begin mass production of IVAS heads in 2025.
