A group of lawmakers in the United States presented a bill to establish a commission on the approach to artificial intelligence.

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers submitted a bill on Tuesday (June 20th) to set up a commission to examine the country’s approach to artificial intelligence (AI). The primary goal of the proposed bill is shaped around the creation of regulations in the AI industry. The bill comes after consumer protection groups in the European Union urged regulators to investigate AI models behind popular chatbots.

Head of Center for AI and Digital Policy Supports Proposal

The bipartisan National AI Commission Act was introduced by Representatives Ted Lieu, Ken Buck, and Anne Eshoo.

The bill proposes the creation of a national body to create a comprehensive framework for regulating AI technology. The law aims to address potential risks associated with AI technology. To achieve this, the Commission will bring together experts, government officials, industry representatives and labor stakeholders. According to the lawmakers, their joint efforts will focus on making recommendations for effective AI regulation.

Head of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy, Merve Hickok, supported the National Artificial Intelligence Commission.

Hickok said the proposal is timely and crucial as it will create the necessary regulations for AI and facilitate public participation in shaping the country’s AI strategy. The Center has previously warned that the US is unprepared to address future AI challenges.

Hickok considers the proposal to establish a commission as a positive step forward and commends the lawmakers for this initiative.
