A mysterious message in the Linux source code has restarted one of the oldest debates in the crypto world. The question of who invented Bitcoin has remained unanswered since the article “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” appeared in 2008 by an author by the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto”. No one has come forward with legitimate evidence. Despite the lack of evidence, the mystery remains.

One thing is for sure, though: Satoshi is not Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, who sparked fun controversy after a line added to the Linux source code. The added line was:

“NAME = I’m Satoshi”

But despite the rumors that spread rapidly on both social media and crypto blogs, Torvalds managed to cut the joke right away. He told ZDNet, “I’m afraid it’s just the work of a prankster who takes advantage of the way GitHub works. GitHub shares objects between different repositories, so you can use an object’s SHA1 ‘name’ to indicate something you’ve done in your own tree. No joker here, webname. He used my name as Torvalds also jokingly said that he wasn’t sitting on a huge bitcoin mountain either.

Satoshi stopped active participation in the Bitcoin community in 2010, and no one has heard of him since. It is also unclear whether he still owns Bitcoin.
