Apple is preparing to take an important step to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm. The affordable iPhone SE 4 model, expected to be released in early 2025, will be equipped with Apple’s own designed 5G modem.

This move means that Apple’s own cellular connection solution will be used on the iPhone for the first time. Currently, Apple includes Qualcomm’s 5G modems in all iPhone models. However, the company has been working for a long time to reduce this dependence by developing its own modem technologies.

Johny Srouji, a senior Apple executive, has in the past confirmed the company’s goal of producing a dedicated cellular chip. iPhone SE 4 seems like an ideal opportunity for Apple’s own 5G modem. Since it is more affordable, it can also offer cost savings compared to Qualcomm’s solutions.

Previously, analyst Jeff Pu noted that Qualcomm could cut costs significantly compared to its $28-per-unit pricing thanks to an in-house modem. This is a critical factor for the affordable SE series.

Apple’s solution isn’t expected to elevate the end-user experience, but it will give the company greater control over hardware and software integration. It can optimize elements such as battery life management. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to start production in December and be released in early 2024.
