South Korean technology giant Samsung’s semiconductor unit made a very important announcement. In the statements made by the company, the next generation storage standard “UFS 4.0” was announced. This announcement means that a new era is beginning, especially for smartphones. So what does UFS 4.0 offer and is it really advantageous compared to the last standard known as UFS 3.1?
Smartphones had eMMC storage standards years ago. However, there has been a revolution with the UFS standard. Smartphones have started to perform much better with this storage technology. The cheapening of technology also contributed positively to the development process of UFS. UFS 3.1, which we had the opportunity to meet in 2020, has become one of the most preferred standards in recent years. Technology companies have started to prefer UFS 3.1 even in mid-segment phones. With Samsung’s statement today, this situation seems to change gradually.
Phones will be twice as fast as today
According to the statements made by Samsung, UFS 4.0 can reach 23.2 Gbps. UFS 3.1, the fastest storage solution today, could reach 11.6 Gbps. In other words, with the new storage solutions, the speed of the phones will double at the point of data transfer from the storage unit to the processor. The sequential read speeds of the storage areas where the UFS 4.0 standard is used will reach 4,200 MB/s, and the sequential write speeds will reach 2,800 MB/s. This means that the response time on the phones will improve. Entering or loading an application will be much faster with UFS 4.0 than before.
You may have thought about how this high performance will affect batteries. According to the statements made by Samsung, the UFS 4.0 standard works 46 percent more efficiently than UFS 3.1. So the energy consumption efficiency of UFS 4.0 is much better than UFS 3.1. Supporting JEDEC standards, UFS 4.0 seems to be preferred in the automotive industry with AR and VR equipment in addition to smartphones. According to the statements made by Samsung, the storage areas that come with the UFS 4.0 standard will enter mass production in the third quarter of 2022.
