Today marks Safe Internet Day, a global initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people. On this occasion, Twitter launched an emoji (#SafeInternetDay, #SID enabled by GIG2021 Tweeting) and a guide to encourage people to join the conversation about Internet safety.

Whether you’re a K-pop fan, Star Wars fan, pop culture junkie or news buff, come to Twitter to be a part of the conversation. Sometimes, however, these conversations can become very hot, hard, and diversified. To celebrate Safer Internet Day, Twitter has prepared a guide to Twitter’s security tools so you can feel safer when joining the conversation, manage your digital footprint, and control your experience on the platform.

Sometimes simply reporting a Tweet isn’t enough, Twitter has many additional security features to help you protect yourself. Here are those 10 features:

Block: Avoid negativity – you can restrict certain accounts from contacting you, seeing your Tweets and following you. Learn more about Blok here.

Mute: Don’t want to see it? Minimize unwanted noise by removing an account’s Tweets from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking them. You can also turn off certain words, conversations, phrases, usernames, emojis or hashtags. Learn more here

Remove Followers: Build your own follower list. Without Blocking someone directly, you can tap on your Followers list and actively unfollow that person.

Sensitive Media: Twitter’s default setting is to place potentially sensitive material behind a warning. You can control this or choose to view this media by changing your settings.

Control your conversations and DMs

Hide Replies:

Conversation Controls: Not everyone has to be in every chat and you can control who can reply to your Tweet at any time. This feature can help you proactively manage a conversation and prevent spam without having to use Block. Check out our speech settings guide here.

My DMs: You choose who can enter your DMs. DM settings allow you to filter spam and limit messages from people you don’t follow. More information here.

Manage your digital footprint and keep yourself and your data safe:

2FA: Keep your account safe. Add an extra layer of security for your account, allowing you to add an additional security check to your password. You can learn how to set it up here.

Protecting your tweets: The whole world doesn’t need to know your thoughts. Keep everything private by choosing to only make your tweets visible to your followers. You will receive a request whenever someone wants to follow you. Find out how here.

Discoverability: Keep IRL buddies and internet buddies separate. When someone new joins Twitter, they may be offered to follow your account if that person and Twitter have access to your email and/or phone number. If you don’t want to be suggested to new accounts based on this data, you can disable your discoverability. Get all the details here.
