Currently, usernames on Discord are random numbers that are added next to your name to ensure authenticity. With the new system, usernames will now be replaced with the new format, which consists of all lowercase letters and has the “@” symbol in front of it, as in Twitter.

With this change, Discord aims to add friends and identify users on the platform more easily, and your profile pictures, friend nicknames and server nicknames in Discord will not be affected in any way. Usernames will be limited to alphanumeric and selected special characters. With this update, all Discord users will need to update their names to suit the new system.

With the update, Discord will notify users when members are eligible to change their username, gradually rolling out over the next few weeks. Also, whether you subscribe to Discord Nitro or not, you need to set your username as the new system sees fit.
