The wind is an inexhaustible, clean resource. Catching these strong winds is a critical component of many plans to replace fossil fuels with renewable, environmentally friendly energy. Norwegian start-up World Wide Wind has designed an innovative vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT for short). Known as counter-rotating vertical turbines (CRVT) with bidirectional opposing blades, these turbines produce twice as much energy as conventional single-acting turbines.

Cheaper more wind power generation

In counter-rotation vertical turbines that swing when anchored in the sea, one of the two blades is connected to the rotor and the other to the stator. The stator doubles the rotation speed of the rotor. In this way, more electricity is produced. The rising turbines are tilted by the wind, but since the blades are specially designed, close placement will not be a problem. Unlike traditional wind turbines, they can easily turn to meet the wind.

These turbines, which are partially made of recycled materials, do not harm sea creatures as they have slow blades. It has a leveled energy cost of less than $50/MWh.
