During the pandemic, many people started to experience depression and anxiety problems. Especially in the process that started with the curfews, many people began to feel uneasy. Studies have shown this clearly.

According to the study in the medical journal The Lancet, depressive and anxiety disorders increased globally in 2020. Depression sickness increased by 28 percent and anxiety disorders by 26 percent. This figure was even higher for Turkey.

Turkey is the country with the highest increase in cases in Europe

In countries such as Turkey, Argentina and the Republic of South Africa, depressive disorders increased by 38.7 percent. The increase in anxiety disorders was over 28 percent. The study, published on October 9, is also the first to be conducted on major depressive disorders and anxiety problems during the pandemic.

The research, which examined how age and gender groups were negatively affected by the pandemic in 204 countries, also touched upon which problems people in which countries face more. The situation for Turkey is not encouraging at all.

Apart from Turkey, Iran, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Chile, South Africa, Egypt and Pakistan were the countries with the highest number of cases. When we look at Europe specifically, Turkey was the country where depressive disorders and anxiety increased the most.

Women and youth more affected

“This situation requires urgent strengthening of the health system,” said Damien Santomauro, an expert at the Australian Queensland Center for Mental Health Research, who is among the lead authors of the study.

Another remarkable result of the study was that women faced more psychological problems during the pandemic. Similarly, young people were among the groups that faced the most psychological problems in the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, for many reasons, the social and economic problems created by the pandemic are affecting women more for a number of reasons. The closure of schools, the restriction of young people’s potential for learning and communication and interaction with their peers, and the combination of this with the risk of unemployment have put more pressure on young people’s mental health,” said researcher Alize Ferrari. .
