Now, unfortunately, we will talk about a similar development once again. Researches reveal that the minimum wage in Turkey has fallen excessively, falling to the lowest levels in Europe.
Sözcü’s Emre Deveci compiled the data of the European Statistics Office (Eurostat) and the analyzes revealed that the gross minimum wage amount in Turkey has melted by 63 euros since January 1, 2021. With the latest data, Turkey has become the country with the lowest minimum wage among the European Union countries. When countries that are not members of the European Union are included in the work, we are in the second place from the last.

According to Eurostat’s data, the highest gross minimum wage in Europe is paid in Luxembourg and the amount is 2,202 euros. The country with the lowest minimum wage in the European Union is Bulgaria with 332 euros. As of January 1, 2021, Turkey gives a gross minimum wage of 3 thousand 577 TL, which was 392 euros according to the exchange rate of that day. However, the euro rate, which has risen to the level of 10.85 TL today, reveals that the minimum wage has decreased to 329 euros. In other words, the minimum wage at the beginning of 2021 has melted by 16 percent as of October 20. According to these figures, we are the second country in Europe with the lowest minimum wage after Albania.
The gross salary statement reveals the non-tax-deducted state of the salaries. When it comes to the net salary, that is, the part that is left after all deductions are taken, a citizen who earns the minimum wage gets around 260 euros in his pocket. In the meantime, let us state that according to the data of the Social Security Institution, the number of minimum wage workers in Turkey in 2016 was 41 percent.
