The competition between the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers Samsung and TSMC seems to gain momentum in the coming periods. Announcing a huge investment plan of approximately 355 billion dollars against TSMC in the past days, Samsung received a response from the giant Taiwanese company.
New production facilities will be built
Announcing an investment plan of approximately $120 billion to counter Samsung’s moves, TSMC will build four new manufacturing plants in Taiwan, each worth $10 billion, as part of this plan. All of these new manufacturing facilities are designed for advanced 3nm chips, according to Nikkei Asia.
In addition, both companies, which announced that they will start 3nm chip production this year, plan to switch to 2nm chips by 2025. However, Samsung’s 3nm GAA technology is expected to provide 35 percent size savings, 30 percent higher performance and up to 50 percent power savings, while TSMC is claimed to switch to GAA technology at 2nm.
It seems that both semiconductor giants are preparing to attract customers such as AMD, Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm and MediaTek, which already use 4nm chips.
