Toyota has been the world’s largest automobile company by vehicle sales for the past three years. The company, which managed to sell 10.5 million cars last year, wants to continue this claim in the coming years. The Japanese manufacturer has to renew itself today, where electric cars are increasing day by day.

Toyota to double the range of electric cars

Toyota almost pioneered hybrid cars by introducing the Prius model about 20 years ago. The brand, which leads the industry in hybrid cars, has not been able to show the same determination in the transition to fully electric vehicles until now. However, the Japanese manufacturer is changing its perspective on electric cars.

Change started at the top in the Japanese automaker. Akio Toyoda, who is the grandson of Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of the company, and who is the CEO of Toyota, recently announced that he will leave his job in order to ‘continue the change’. With Koji Sato, who replaced Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s transition to electric cars began.

After Koji Sato took over the job on April 1, Toyota’s electric car work accelerated. Toyota announced at a press conference that they will launch 10 new electric cars by 2026.

Hiroki Nakajima, the company’s chief technology officer, added that Toyota aims to produce 1.5 million electric cars per year by 2026, adding that the company will set up a special unit to focus on electric powered vehicles.
