PlayStation 5, which was released on November 12, 2020 and included new generation hardware, had hit a big obstacle with the coronavirus. The production facilities closed after the restrictions and the supply shortage triggered by the chip crisis prevented PlayStation 5 sales from going at the desired level. While the chip crisis is still in effect, an important statement came from Sony today.
Sony announced how many PlayStation 5 units it sold in total in the first quarter of 2022, that is, between January and March. The period, which coincided with the last quarter of the company’s fiscal year, also revealed Sony’s 2021 fiscal year success. According to the shared statement, Sony has sold a total of 2 million PlayStation 5 units in the last 3 months. This number was 3.3 million in the same period of last year.
Although PlayStation 5 sales decreased, game sales increased
The total number of PlayStation 5 sold by Sony increased to 19.3 million units with the latest data. Although the company’s PlayStation 5 sales decreased compared to last year, a significant increase was seen in game sales. PS4/PS5 game sales, which were 61.4 million units in the same period of last year, were measured as 70.5 million units in this period. 14.5 million of these games were Sony’s own games.
Declining PlayStation 5 sales showed that PlayStation 5 fell further behind PlayStation 4 in terms of sales success. PlayStation 4 sold 3.1 million more than PlayStation 5 in the first period after its release. Finally, Sony announced that its Gaming and Network Services arm generated a total revenue of $5.1 billion in the last 3 months.
