Recently, it is very common to monitor users via in-app browser on social media platforms. Meta companies are on the agenda with this development in TikTok after Facebook and Instagram. A researcher has revealed that TikTok tracks all the movements of users via the in-app browser.
Felix Krause uncovers a code that tracks users
According to a study, when TikTok users access a website through a link in the app, TikTok adds code that can track anything. This tracking even makes it possible for the platform to capture a user’s credit card information or password.
This code, revealed by researcher Felix Krause, tracks all the movements of users accessing various websites. In other words, the application contains a code that records all the data and clicks that users have used in case they click on any link in the application.
The platform uses an in-app browser made by TikTok, instead of popular browsers such as Chrome or Safari, to access any link shared in the application. In this application, the company follows what the users are doing step by step.
Software researcher Felix Krause said, “This is an unusual engineering job. This is not accidental or random.” said. TikTok, on the other hand, vehemently rejected the idea that it was tracking users. He also said that these features are in the code, but TikTok does not use them.
Maureen Shanahan made a statement on behalf of TikTok. “Like other platforms, we use an in-app browser to provide an optimal user experience, but the Javascript code in question is only used for performance monitoring of this experience, such as debugging, troubleshooting, and checking how fast a page loads or if it crashes.”
