TikTok has announced that it will temporarily restrict users in Russia from uploading and live-streaming new videos to its platform. It is stated that this decision was taken as a precaution against the newly enacted laws in Russia that stipulate years of imprisonment for those accused of spreading “false information” about the military and/or government. “We are examining the security implications of this law, but in the meantime we have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new content to our video service in Russia,” says
TikTok. TikTok also stated that the safety of its users is its “highest priority”.
For now, TikTok users in Russia can still send messages to each other and to friends in other countries. “We will continue to evaluate evolving conditions in Russia to determine when exactly we can resume our services in Russia,” TikTok said in its statement.
