READING NOW TikTok has expanded its community policies!

TikTok announced on Tuesday that it aims to promote safety and well-being. At this point, the community made some changes to its guidelines. Among the changes, the popular social media app has taken a stricter approach to dangerous acts such as suicide hoaxes.

It first outlined policy on such issues back in November. Community guidelines are now highlighted in a separate category to make it easier for people to find. Previously, this section was featured in TikTok’s suicide and self-harm policies. The social media app has also posted videos that encourage people to stop, think and make decisions when they see risky online challenges.

TikTok aims to prevent misogyny

TikTok has outright banned misnaming, false gender, and misogyny in the update to its community policies. Misnaming is when someone intentionally or unintentionally uses a trans person’s former name without their consent. GLAAD called this an invasion of privacy that undermines the trans person’s truly authentic identity and can put them at risk of discrimination or even violence.

Social media app bans content that promotes or encourages scientifically unsubstantiated therapy practice when therapy is used to try to convert LGBTQ people. Major medical and mental health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association, have condemned the practice. Some cities and states even have laws designed to protect people from it.

Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s Head of Trust and Security, shared a blog post on the subject. Here he has the following words:

“While these ideologies have long been banned on TikTok, we have heard from creators and nonprofits that it is important to be upfront in our Community Guidelines.”

Updated community policies have also expanded TikTok’s ban on content promoting eating disorders. In addition, policies focused on the security and integrity of the application have also expanded. The social media app said the guidelines changes will be implemented in the next few weeks.
