TikTok, the social media platform that hosts millions of users worldwide, can be removed from app stores. Today, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has filed a request for the app to be removed from Android and iOS due to data security concerns regarding China.
Awaiting response from Apple and Google
Faced with the danger of a similar ban during the Trump administration, TikTok was described as “a matter of serious concern” by US President Joe Biden.
However, TikTok, which announced on June 17 that it moved the private data of US users from its data centers in the USA and Singapore to Oracle cloud servers, was accused of leaking non-public data about US users shortly after the new development.
In a June 24 FCC letter sent to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google parent company Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, “TikTok is not what it seems on the surface. This is not just an app to share funny videos or memes. This is sheepskin,” Carr said. “At its core, TikTok functions as an advanced surveillance tool that collects vast amounts of personal and sensitive data.” uttered his words.
In addition, the FCC official emphasized that if TikTok is not removed from the application stores, Apple and Google must make a statement to him by July 8th.
