Social media giant TikTok seems to continue to add new capabilities to the platform. Announcing the Series feature for content producers in the past days, the platform now plans to offer a new streaming option to users. This stream, called ‘STEM’, will allow users to watch content especially on science.

TikTok adds a new science-focused streaming option

According to the shared details, in the streaming section, which will be named “STEM”, users will be presented with content in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Thus, users will have easier access to useful information without having to scroll through entertainment-oriented content.

TikTok says the new feature will be available for users in the US starting in the coming weeks. However, the new feature will be added alongside the two streaming options already available in the app. In other words, next to the “For You” and “following” flow pages, there will now be a “STEM” section.

In addition, the social media giant says that the videos in this section will be strictly supervised by security agencies. Videos that do not pass this inspection will not be included in the stream. As it is known, TikTok has been harshly criticized for a while due to misinformation and national security concerns.

So much so that in late 2022, the US Senate unanimously passed the bill banning federal government employees from downloading TikTok to state-owned devices. Time will tell if the new feature will help TikTok survive in the US.
