Concept cars with interesting designs have emerged in the automotive world so far. While some of these tools were offered to customers, others were buried in the dark pages of history. Although Oldsmobile’s Aerotech vehicle, which is under the control of General Motors, never made its debut, years later it is on social media again.
The Oldsmobile Aerotech story announced in 1988
Oldsmobile made history by developing a supersport car prototype called the Aerotech in 1987, before ending production in 2004. Powered by a twin-turbocharged Quad 4 engine, Aerotech was built to prove Oldsmobile’s technology.
Aerotech, which was first unveiled in 1988, featured three different prototype designs. The most radical design was one with a longtail rear end reminiscent of the McLaren Speedtail. In addition to the design, the turbocharged engine providing 1000 horsepower also attracted a lot of attention.
The 1000 horsepower of the concept car was also proven with a track record. Race driver AJ Foyt, who accelerated Aerotech to 4423 km / h, still holds the record for “the highest documented speed for a concept-based car”.
Aerotech’s Quad 4 engine technology continued to be used in concept models such as the Cutlass Calais. It was decided to shut down Oldsmobile while the company was working on more ambitious engines like the Quad 8 V8. Quad 8 technology did not see the light of day and Oldsmobile was disbanded in 2004.
After 35 years, Aerotech’s design and powerful engine went viral again. This vehicle also demonstrates the super sports car ingenuity of the late 1980s.
