Things to Consider on Aircraft in the Omicron Era

The Omicron variant continues to amaze with its ability to spread, although in the first weeks it was not cause for concern due to its mild symptoms. Quite different from other variants in terms of symptoms, Omicron is already starting to ruin the big events that will take place in 2022.

prof. Dr. Osman Müftüoğlu drew attention to the speed of Omicron’s spread in his article published in Hürriyet newspaper today. Müftüoğlu, who made suggestions for air travel at the beginning of the epidemic, reminded these recommendations during the Omicron period.

“Prefer business”

prof. Dr. Osman Müftüoğlu’s reminders and warnings were as follows: Readers of this column will easily remember: I made some suggestions about the precautions to be taken in plane travel during the beginning of the epidemic. For example, ‘travelling in the front seats as much as possible, not sitting close to toilets, choosing to sit by the window rather than in the aisle’ should be the first precautions that come to mind. According to Powell, an IATA official who made the above statement, it seems that ‘preferring to fly in Business Class is also safer than traveling in the more congested economy section’.

Referring to the do’s and don’ts during the flight, Müftüoğlu continued his article with the following statements: On the other hand, not removing the masks during the travel, being sensitive to the surfaces in the plane – including the seats -, avoiding face-to-face contact with those sitting in the next seat during the travel, and never removing the masks. Not eating at the same time is shown as an important and effective additional measure. It would be beneficial to take these suggestions into account and to implement the measures related to air travel by following the rules of “mask, distance, hygiene” even before entering the airport gate.
