There are many concerns that OpenAI’s ChatGPT could help students cheat in exams, but how successful would it be if you asked the chatbot to take a graduate-level exam? It turns out that ChatGPT can pass the exam, but barely.
In a newly published study, University of Minnesota law professors had ChatGPT generate answers for graduate exams in four courses at their school. The AI passed all four exams, but received an average grade of C+. Wharton School of Business professor Christian Terwiesch found that ChatGPT passed a business administration exam with a grade of B. In other words, it does not seem possible to use this technology to influence academics.

Research teams found artificial intelligence “inconsistent” to say the least. The University of Minnesota group noted that ChatGPT was good at covering “ground rules” and summarizing doctrines, but floundered when trying to identify issues relevant to a case. Terwiesch said ChatGPT was “great” for simple operations management and process analysis questions, but couldn’t handle advanced questions. ChatGPT can make mistakes even in 6th grade math.
Study groups still believe ChatGPT could have a place in the classroom. Professors can teach students how to trust AI in the workplace and even use it to write and grade exams. Terwiesch says this technology could ultimately save students time, such as more lectures and new course material.
