While it is surprising to see hydrogen fueled cars these days when we are adapting to the electric conversion, the Chinese Guangzhou Automobile Group, or GAC for short, introduced the world’s first ammonia-powered automobile engine.
Chinese GAC introduced ammonia-powered automobile engine!
Chinese auto company GAC has developed a new automobile engine that can run on ammonia as an alternative to electricity and hydrogen fuel. This 2-liter engine produces 120 kW of power. This equates to roughly 160 horsepower.
China’s GAP said it has developed the world’s first ammonia-powered automobile engine and is contributing to new energy solutions such as battery-powered electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells that reduce carbon emissions in the transportation industry.
Qi Hongzhong from GAC’s research and development center told reporters:
“We overcame the shortage of ammonia being difficult to burn quickly and started using the fuel in the passenger car industry,” he said. “It is worth estimating the value for community and commercial uses.”
The ammonia-powered engine was unveiled as part of the company’s annual tech showcase, which also showcases a Trumpchi minivan powered by a hybrid hydrogen platform, an alternative fuel system introduced by its Japanese partner Toyota, and a flying car called the Gove, which resembles a large drone. This new type of fuel has been researched by scientists for a while because it does not contain carbon. However, due to its low flammability and high nitrogen oxide emissions, it could not be used in series production cars.
But GAC has made it clear that there can be ammonia-powered vehicles with 90 percent less carbon emissions than normal internal combustion cars, thanks to this 2.0-liter engine, which can burn liquid ammonia more efficiently and safely.
The company’s electric car brand, Aion, has become the third best-selling clean car brand in the country, after BYD and Tesla, after General Motors took over its joint venture with SAIC Motor and Wuling Motors Holdings.
Therefore, the Chinese state-owned GAC is in a position to lead China’s well-established companies in the transition to green energy. In fact, its latest battery technology is in great demand as it can be fully charged in just 15 minutes in all weather conditions.
