While it is estimated that 1.34 billion people around the world consume high levels of alcohol, a new study published today in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet revealed a result that particularly concerns young people. According to the study, people who drink alcohol at a young age face more health risks than older adults.

The new study is the first to report alcohol risk by geographic, region, age, gender and year. According to the study, the 15-39 age group, which consists of the highest alcohol consumption worldwide, especially among men, does not see any benefit from alcohol consumption in terms of health and faces many health risks.

Alcohol-related negativities are most common in the 15-39 age group:

According to the data obtained in the research, 60% of alcohol-related accidents and situations appear mostly in individuals between the ages of 15-39. These situations include traffic accidents with vehicles, suicides and murders. The results were as follows:

  • The recommended daily alcohol consumption for men between the ages of 15 and 39 is 0.136 of the standard consumption,
  • The recommended daily alcohol consumption for women aged 15 to 39 was 0.273 of the standard consumption.

Standard alcohol consumption is considered to be 10 grams of pure alcohol. This value is equivalent to 100 milliliters of red wine with 13% alcohol or a glass of beer with 3.5% alcohol.

Alcohol consumption has also been shown to be beneficial for some:

Although the research indicated that ideal alcohol consumption and high alcohol consumption is harmful for those aged 15-39, it showed that alcohol can be beneficial for individuals over 40 years of age as well. According to this,

  • The safe amount of alcohol consumption in men aged 40 – 64 is 0.527 – 1.69 times the standard consumption, 0.562 – 1.82 times for women;
  • The alcohol consumption limit, which is considered harmful for 65 years and older, was determined as 3.19 times the standard for men and 3.51 times for women.
