The TOP500, which lists the world’s most powerful supercomputers, has been updated. AMD left its mark on the list, which included the latest test results. Because the supercomputer named Frontier, which uses the company’s hardware, managed to grab the title of ‘the fastest supercomputer in the world’ as a result of the tests. The supercomputer installed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy broke a record by exceeding 1.102 ExaFlops/sec.
TOP500 is the longest running and accepted list of the supercomputer industry. The list, which was first published in 1993, did not have as advanced supercomputers as today’s in those years. The list, which was updated with the title of June 2022, revealed unique results. So much so that Frontier, which is at the top of the list, has over 8 million cores in total. Using 9,408 of AMD’s 64-core Trento processors, the supercomputer is supported by AMD Radeon MI250X GPUs. Frontier’s total RAM capacity was announced as 4.6 petabytes. The storage capacity of the supercomputer is 700 petabytes and the storage speed of the device is 75 TB/s.

1.69 ExaFlop speed is hard to describe. Experts say that this supercomputer can be thought of as a brain, and that a single neuron in this brain performs 68 million operations per second. Considering that the neurons in the brain of a standard person perform around 200 operations per second, we can say that the figures described and the power of this supercomputer are astonishing.
AMD-based supercomputer topped the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers. So much so that the 7 supercomputers following Frontier cannot produce as much power as this in total.
