Powerful magnets work in all areas of life, from biology to health. These magnets, which can be used from the treatment of common diseases to the fight against cancer, also make it possible to find out what science is and solve the problems of aging. Work continues to create the world’s strongest magnet.

In the past years, a group of scientists working in this field wanted to break the ‘world magnetic field record’ with a power of 1200 Tesla (3.404 Watt), but they could not succeed and blew up the laboratory. Again in the past years, scientists broke the record for the strongest magnetic field in the world with a very small magnet. Now scientists have set a new record, creating the earth’s strong magnetic field.

The record was broken with a material with a diameter of only 33 mm

The record for the world’s strongest magnet was broken in 1999 at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in the USA. The magnetic field record created with the power of 45 Tesla had never been broken for 23 years. In the past years, MagLab engineers have improved this record a little more, and a miniature magnet has managed to set a new record by creating a magnetic field of 45.5 Tesla (4.88 Watts).

At the Continuous High Magnetic Field Facility (SHMFF) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a magnet that has been under development for years has set a new world record by achieving a constant magnetic field of 45.22 Tesla (4.90 Watts). This magnet, which is in direct contact with the magnetic field, was produced using only 33 mm diameter material.

A new record has been broken on top of the record set in 2016.

Both the MagLab and SHMFF research teams have been working on their own hybrid magnets for some time. This magnet uses two different ways of creating a magnetic field. One of these fields is an outer superconducting ring while the other is an inner resistive magnet.

Combining the two technologies significantly reduces these limitations, allowing a strong, stable magnetic field to propagate. This is how MagLab developed the 45 Tesla magnet, and in 2016 SHMFF achieved a constant magnetic field strength of 40 Tesla. However, the Chinese Academy of Sciences team did not want the record to stay there and have continued to work on its magnets ever since. In the end, that hard work paid off, and with a power input of 26.9 megawatts, the team managed to achieve the record 45.22 Tesla.

Physicist Guangli Kuang, who is part of the team, explained that they completely renewed the structure of the magnet and developed new materials to obtain a higher magnetic field, and that they were also able to obtain such a strong magnet by optimizing the production process of Butter discs. The scientists who developed the magnet think that it will lead the studies in this field.
