The world’s largest solar power plant on a single site came into operation in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The Al Dhafra solar power plant, with an installed capacity of 2 GW, was built 35 km outside Abu Dhabi.

The 20 square kilometer power plant, which uses 4 million double-sided solar panels, can provide enough electricity for 200 thousand homes. At the same time, it prevents the release of 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.

In the project where 4500 people worked, 10 MW panel installation was carried out per day. The project was carried out in cooperation with Abu Dhabi-based companies Masdar and TAQA, as well as French EDF and Chinese solar panel manufacturer JinkoPower.

The project is also very competitive in price. The electricity produced by the power plant will be purchased at a price of 1.32 cents/kWh.

With the commissioning of the project, the solar energy capacity of the United Arab Emirates increased to 3.2 GW. Another 1.5 GW power plant is planned to be built near Abu Dhabi. The United Arab Emirates aims to triple its renewable energy capacity to 14 GW by 2030.
