A DNA test will be conducted to determine if potentially the world’s largest potato is really a potato.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown, a couple near Hamilton, New Zealand, found an enormous specimen of potatoes in their garden last August. The potato, which they named Dug, weighed 7.8 kilograms, making it a candidate for the world’s largest potato.

As the potato made international news, Colin told the Washington Post, “We unearthed this huge tuber and we thought to ourselves, ‘What is this? Is it some kind of weird mushroom?’ The couple said they continued digging for a considerable amount of time to fully uncover this potato monster.

Here it is, “Dug”Guardian

The potato also passed the initial test, which involved Colin eating a piece and confirming that it was a “real potato.”

The couple recently submitted the information to the Guinness Book of Records. Dug can easily beat the current world record of 4.98 kilograms of potatoes, and the only question is whether Dug is really a potato. Officials said they wanted to confirm through DNA testing that this was what they thought before giving the double Dug the record.

“They think I’m genetically modified?” Colin asked about the request. He said and continued: “Although it is a sad test, I want to prove them wrong. We will do whatever they ask of us.”

The couple worries about losing weight while they wait for Dug’s record to be approved and dry and moldy. While awaiting approval, they also state that they moved Dug to a freezer to slow this process down.
