Struggling to claim the title of world’s largest potato, the “potato candidate” was disappointed when DNA testing revealed that it wasn’t actually a potato. Colin and Donna Craig-Brown, a couple near New Zealand, were thrilled when they found what they believed to be potatoes in their vegetable garden in August of last year. The potato-like object they named Dug weighed 7.8 kilograms, making it a candidate for the world’s largest potato.

The couple submitted the potato to the Guinness Book of Records. Dug should have easily surpassed the current world record-holding potato, which weighs 4.98 kilograms; if it really was a potato.

Guinness Book of Records officials wanted to confirm it was a potato through DNA testing before giving Dug the record. “They think I’m genetically modified?” Colin asked about the request. and added: “I want to prove them wrong. We will do whatever they ask of us.”

Turned out to be no potato

DNA test was concluded by the Guinness Book of Records last week. According to the Independent’s report, an e-mail sent to the couple read, “Unfortunately, it’s not a potato. It’s actually a kind of gourd tuber. So unfortunately we have to disqualify the application.”

Disappointed, the couple accepted the DNA evidence and were no longer stubborn that Dug was not a potato. “Dug is the world’s biggest non-potato,” Craig-Brown told The Independent…
