The world’s first “artificial intelligence law” passed in Europe
For those who don’t know, the European Commission first proposed the Artificial Intelligence Act in April 2021. However, the new law, approved by parliament, places significant restrictions on major models such as Midjourney and ChatGPT to set a more secure and transparent standard worldwide. First, by law, generative AI developers will be required to submit their systems for review before they are released.
Real-time biometric identification systems are also restricted under the law. In other words, facial recognition applications through smart cameras will be banned in public places. In addition, the new law mentions systems that analyze the behavior of citizens, such as “social scoring”. Accordingly, evaluation systems will not be allowed in any way.
The new law also restricts biometric systems and facial recognition apps, as well as devices such as voice-activated toys that are thought to encourage dangerous behavior in children.
The law, adopted by the European Parliament with 499 votes in favor, 28 against and 93 abstentions, is expected to enter into force by 2024. However, representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the European Union are expected to discuss the details for the final version of the law. Therefore, we can see small changes in the decisions taken.
