Google CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted that Google Search recorded the highest traffic in its 25-year history during the FIFA World Cup final yesterday. Thus, Google proved to be an effective information center for the final. When the numbers are released, the Argentina v France final will likely be the most watched final in history as well.

Google has made it easier for users to keep up with the excitement of the cup, with updated Search features available ahead of the World Cup. A search for “World Cup” showed a special section at the top, for example, with a list of upcoming matches, including dates and local times. It was also possible to receive notifications on mobile for certain teams by tapping the bell icon and selecting the squad you want to follow.
Also, exciting action and powerful stories helped Google. These include Lionel Messi finally winning the World Cup, Kylian Mbappe’s legendary performance, France’s comeback late in the second half, incredible extra time with two goals scored, and breathtaking penalty shootouts. All of this seems to have caused fans to turn to Google for even the smallest detail.
