Apple has been in a patent lawsuit with health technology company AliveCor for months. The U.S. government pursued the case. The result was against the brand. Depending on the result, Apple Watch sales may be stopped by the US government. Because the Apple Watch is at risk of an import ban.
Will Apple Watch get an import ban?
Apple and AliveCor’s patent litigation has been concluded. As a result of the lawsuit, it was stated that Apple violated the patents of AliveCor company. Apple appealed this decision and went to the Biden administration. However, the decision was still negative for the company.
The Biden administration has stated that the patent litigation result is correct. This paved the way for the US International Trade Commission’s Apple Watch import ban decision, depending on how the appeal decision would result. Apple Watch sales could stall.
California-based health technology manufacturer AliveCor made a statement. In a statement, Priya Abani, CEO of AliveCor, said:
We support the decision of the US International Trade Commission. We applaud President Biden for blaming Apple for infringing the patents that underpin our industry-leading company’s EKG technology. This decision sends a clear message that the US will protect patents to create and scale new technologies that benefit consumers.
The decision could have been implemented in December!
The US International Trade Commission proposed to implement the import ban decision on Apple Watch sales on a temporary basis. If this decision were valid, Apple would have to stop all sales of Apple Watch with EKG support. Apple plans to appeal the decision in federal court.
