A survey of news watching habits showed that TikTok is the fastest growing news source among adults in the UK. The app is currently used as a news source by 7 percent of UK adults, compared to 1% in 2020, according to a report by UK regulator Ofcom.

This survey is further proof of TikTok’s massive and growing presence in the digital world, and shows how quickly the app has come to be used as a source of news as well as entertainment. For example, in a recent estimate, 40% of Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) in the US use TikTok or Instagram for everyday searches such as places to eat, rather than the previously preferred options of Google Searches or Maps. was specified.

But while TikTok is fast rising as a news outlet in the UK, it’s still seen as the sixth most popular choice among people aged 16 to 24 (used by 27% of this demographic). The top six are BBC website/app (29%), Twitter (35%), news TV channel BBC One (36%), Facebook (40%) and Instagram (46%).

Although the rate of social media news is increasing in younger age groups, the classical way of getting news cannot prevent talking to family (65%) and watching TV (59%).

However, given TikTok’s reputation for false news, this is likely to be worrisome in the near future.
