About 23 years ago, two aircraft flying over the city of Überlingen, Germany witnessed a fatal disaster. Everyone in the aircraft lost their lives and these vehicles became unusable.
So exactly what happened?
Everything took place on the night of July 1, 2002.
Tupolev Tu-154, which went from Moscow to Barcelona from Moscow to Barcelona and Bal Bashkirian Airlines, was floating in the skies of the sky with 2 pilots and 69 passengers. The height was about 36,000 feetti.
Coincidentally, the Boeing 757 aircraft for a DHL cargo company was watching in the direction. So what was the cause or who was it? Unfortunately, this error was caused by Peter Nielsen, responsible for Air traffic in Switzerland.
In fact, Peter was trying to manage many systems that evening manually and was the only one in the audit room. So there was no authority to consult or help him.
The pilots of the DHL aircraft asked for a 36,000 feet to go because they wanted to save fuel on the night of July 1.
Peter accepted his requests. But just like the Tupolev TU-154 aircraft in the minutes was on 36,000 feet. After a while, the air traffic responsible realized that the two aircraft were at the altitude, but it was a little late. With a large panic, Tupolev conveyed to the TU-154 aircraft in an emergency form.
On the other hand, TCAS (traffic collision measure system) is used to prevent possible diameters or accidents in aviation.
This system is activated if the aircraft approach each other dangerously and warns the pilots in a quick way. In the continuation of the incident, the pilots of the Tupolev TU-154, not the system’s rise instructions, but the descent instruction of Peter.
In addition, the pilots of the other aircraft, who heard the instructions of TCAS, began to descend in almost one -to -one minutes, and all these sequences of defects caused both aircraft to intersect in the air.
In other words, on the night of July 1, 2002, there was a disaster of Überlingen and a big explosion sound was heard. The tail of the Boeing 757 entered the body of Tupolev TU-154. Both aircraft were shredded in the air and fell near the settlements.
Unfortunately, there was not even a single person who survived the planes.
After this horrifying event, international aviation rules changed. Now, if the air traffic inspection instructions and traffic collision measure system fall in contrast, the pilots will only have to listen to TCAS and follow their instructions.
In summary, a flaw that appears to be small caused many people to death and two aircraft to become completely unusable. However, this accident also allowed to increase security measures in aviation and change some rules.
