Epic Games announced in a statement that it currently has more than 500 million Epic Games accounts. Epic had developed the Epic Games Store as a competitor to Steam and set off with the wind of games such as Fortnite and Rocket League. It is certain that this number reached is a very important point.
Epic did not share further details on these 500 million, nor did it reveal how many of these accounts were simply people playing Epic’s own games (like Fortnite) or simply using Epic’s storefront.
Since the launch in December 2018, the company has committed a large amount of resources to grow its PC games store and therefore get more people to sign up. For example, a document in the Epic v. Apple case showed that more than 7 million people tried the Epic Games Store because of the Grand Theft Auto V giveaway despite 8 hours of outage. Epic has committed to continuing to offer free games into 2022, indicating that the company thinks the cost of free games is acceptable to attract users to the platform.
Also, Epic should welcome the heavy use of Unreal Engine developer tools. The company said 48 percent of “announced next-gen games” were developed on the platform.
