The cost of saving Cyberpunk 2077 has been revealed
As you know, Cyberpunk 2077’s technical problems, the lack of many promised features in the game, and its unplayability on last generation consoles led to refund requests and various lawsuits. However, after a series of patches, upgrades and new modes, the game is now playable. Of course, most of this happened with the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty. So how much did Cyberpunk 2077 cost the Polish company?
At its recent Investor Day, CD Projekt Red revealed that it spent $40 million to $41 million on bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to the current console generation and new features. Meanwhile, the newly released Phantom Liberty expansion cost the company $84 million, with its Hollywood cast and huge production values. This is surprisingly high for a DLC.
So, how much is the total cost of Cyberpunk 2077?
By comparison, CDPR spent $174 million on the development of Cyberpunk 2077 and $142 million on marketing the game. So we’re looking at the second most expensive video game officially on record at $439.8 million. At the top of the list is Star Citizen, with a budget of over 500 million dollars. However, the game’s budget comes mostly from crowdfunding.
Additionally, CDPR reported that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 25 million copies since its launch almost three years ago. Sales of Phantom Liberty surpassed 3 million in its first week. At this point, CDPR CEO Adam Kicinski says, “It took four years for The Witcher 3 and its expansion packs to reach this milestone.”
