It is a known fact that the African continent is divided into two. But now scientists have revealed that Africa is falling apart faster than previously thought. For this reason, the continent will split into two and form new continents much earlier than expected.
A 56 kilometer long crack appeared in the Ethiopian desert in 2005. But it has been expanding at a rate of half an inch per year since then. Researchers previously thought this separation would take tens of millions of years, but the University of California said in a statement that it will likely occur within one to five million years.
This separation will also cause the formation of a new ocean and continent on Earth. Scientists think that the waters of the Indian Ocean will move in and the current East African Rift Valley will be submerged.
If water continues to flow into the region, the new ocean that will be formed will be as deep as the Atlantic Ocean.
This progressive crack covers half of Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia, and in the future Ethiopia will turn into a new continent called the ‘Nubian continent’. It is not known whether scientists a million years from now will call this new continent the Nubian continent, but it is a fact that the new continent has already been named.
