Although Nvidia’s top model, the GeForce RTX 4090, has a very high TDP of 450W, most of the time, it barely reaches this limit, at least in games. Therefore, the card actually has a high energy efficiency despite its high TDP value. But there are ways to make this situation even better: power-limit and undervolt.

In most independent reviews, the RTX 4090 typically consumes between 330W and 350W in gaming tests. Korean technology publication Quasar Zone, on the other hand, carried this consumption down further and conducted some tests to discover how much performance the card would lose.

RTX 4090 suffers very little performance loss at 60 percent TDP

Quasar Zone first tested the RTX 4090 with a power limitation of up to 60%. By the way, it should be noted that the power limit option is quite simple to use. These limitations can be made with tools such as MSI Afterburner. Anyway, the RTX 4090 was tested in five games at the 60 percent power limit i.e. 270W TDP limit.
These games are Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel Spider-Man Remastered, Forza Horizon 5, Lostark and PUBG Battlegrounds. Tested at 4K and with maximum quality settings, the graphics card performed only 8 percent lower. These values are similar in the process of reducing the voltage of the GPU from 1 V stock to 850 mV.

Meanwhile, the test system specs are as follows: Core i9 13900K, 32GB DDR5 7400 RAM, Asus Rog Maximus Z790 Extreme motherboard and Enermax EDT1250EWT power supply. The video card driver in the system is Game Ready WHQL 526.98. In the meantime, it should be noted that the performance and temperature of the graphics card are stable in both test scenarios.
