The Reason You’ll Say “I’ve Been Enlightened” That Some Wires Are Intertwined (Not Because They Hold Each Other)

You may think that this method is applied so that the cables are durable or hold each other, but the job is a little different than the first thing that comes to mind.

The developments we see in the field of engineering that never slow down can show themselves in all areas of our lives, even in very simple ways. We see that this sector, which seeks solutions to problems, produces solutions that provide great convenience, even if it seems quite simple to our eyes.

Sometimes, the solution produced for a problem can be unimaginably effective for another problem that has nothing to do with it. The production of cables and ropes used in the field of data transmission, wrapped around each other, is one of the clearest examples of this. Let’s look at how these tools, which have two different purposes, meet at a common point.

The ropes we are accustomed to consist of ropes wrapped around each other.

“But why don’t we just lay the ropes straight instead of messing around with that?” You may have thought. The reason for this can be explained as follows: When such vegetable ropes, especially steel ones, are bent, the outside part is stretched while the inner part is compressed. This reduces the bendability of the cables, which are expected to be strong, and may also cause them to break.

When the ropes are wrapped together, the stretch-compression forces that we mentioned for the steel ones are balanced and the rope becomes much more flexible. This also increases stamina. Because the coiled structure of the rope during the applied force distributes the incoming force to the individual wires more evenly.

We understood the reason why ropes that should be durable are produced this way. So why are conductor cables made this way?

This system, which is generally used in low voltage electrical cables, ensures the reduction of electromagnetic noise. Twisting in this way reduces the effect of the electromagnetic field between parallel cables carrying current in the opposite direction and prevents the interference that will occur both in that cable and in other cables.

In other words, this technique has emerged to prevent signal distortions that may occur between the cables themselves or due to external sources.

In addition, passively, of course, it ensures that the cables can hold each other and are a little more durable. But the main purpose of this method is to make the conductor cables and ropes we mentioned most efficient.
