GTA 6 won’t be released on PC at launch, and now a former Rockstar Games animator is explaining why it’s taking so long to make PC ports of the games. For those who don’t know, GTA 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles in 2025. It is completely unclear when the PC version will arrive.
Reasons for the delay of GTA 6 PC version
According to Mike York, who has worked with Rockstar Games on games like GTA 5 and RDR2, there are two main reasons why the PC port of GTA 6 will take some time: focusing on what sells and the huge amount of meticulous, hard work that goes into the PC versions of the games. When GTA 5 was released for PC, it did not cause major problems in terms of optimization (if my memory serves me correctly). However, for this to happen, PC players had to wait until 2015 for the game, which came to consoles in 2013.
According to Mike York, much of the reason for the PC port’s delay comes down to financial reasons. Rockstar knows that GTA 6 will sell significant amounts on Xbox and Playstation and is focusing on this area. Naturally, optimizations are also made for consoles. Mike York underlines that in the GTA 5 period, the PC version of the game existed from the very beginning, but it was not fully “polished”. According to him, once the work on consoles is completed, the process of focusing on the PC side begins.
According to the former Rockstar employee, after the successful console release after subtle optimizations, a period of pushing the boundaries for the PC version begins. Because the hardware limitations on the PC platform are low, improvements can be made on the scenes. York also attributes one of the main reasons why the PC port took so long to be the different architecture and different components. You can learn more details from the video below.
