Many principles are in a relentless race when it comes to quantum processors. It is stated that thanks to these processors, revolutionary results can be achieved in scientific research. Currently, the world’s most powerful quantum computer is the IBM Osprey with 433 qubits. Another country that has a strong assertiveness in studies in this field is Iran. Iran unveiled its first “quantum processor” at an event last week. But the reality is quite different and ridiculous.

Iran introduces “quantum processor”

The device was exhibited as the “first product of the quantum processing algorithm” during the “Quantum Processing” event held at Noshahr Imam Khomeini Sea University last week. Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, Deputy Coordinator of the Islamic Republic Army and former Commander of the Naval Forces, officially introduced the device at the event after speaking about the country’s advances in modern technologies. It is stated that the introduced device is a groundbreaking quantum processor that can detect surface ships.

Sold on Amazon

The product, which was introduced after this promotion, became a subject of great discussion and ridicule on Iranian social media. Because the name of the brand and model (ZedBoard Zynq-7000 ARM/FPGA SoC Development Board) is clearly seen on the card, which was launched as a success of the army. What is more interesting is that this product is produced by the US-based hardware and software company Digilent and is sold for $ 600 on Amazon.

Of course, before buying, let’s point out that there is no quantum component such as a quantum circuit or processor in this device. This product is nothing more than a low-cost development board. On the other hand, we have seen such fake announcements before in Iran. For example, in April 2020, shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have developed a “breakthrough” superdevice that could detect people infected with the coronavirus within 100 meters.
