It’s time to say goodbye to Google Play Movies & TV
In a recently published support document, Google detailed how you’ll be able to watch TV shows and movies you’ve purchased through Google Play Movies & TV when the brand disappears entirely in January. According to Google, if you have a television or streaming device that supports Android TV, you can watch the content you purchase or rent from the Store tab as of January 17. If you have a cable box or set-top box running Android TV, you’ll be able to watch/rent it from the YouTube app starting the same day. It is also possible to go to YouTube in the browser.
Google has been slowly moving users away from Google Play Movies and TV for a while now and directing Android TV users to the Google TV app. Therefore, this transition is not expected to be very harsh. Notably, you’ll still be able to watch what you’ve purchased even if you’re getting the content from a different place, which is better than Sony announcing that it will remove Discovery content that users have paid for from its libraries.
