As smartphones got more powerful, their screens started to get bigger too. While phones with 6-inch screens are considered standard today, this has expanded even more with foldable models. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun believes that producing small-screen phones will not cover the costs.
Xiaomi does not want to produce small screen phones
The market for small screen models has shrunk as phone users prefer devices with screens larger than 6 inches. In fact, it has become almost impossible to find a phone with a powerful and small screen, except for the iPhone SE 3.
A user who reached Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun from the Chinese social media platform Weibo asked the manufacturer’s perspective on small-screen phones. CEO Jun said the small-screen phone market volume is too small to handle R&D costs for the flagship.
The tech giant’s latest flagship Xiaomi 13 has a relatively small screen. The phone, which comes with a 6.36-inch screen, is one of the most striking models in the market with its 93.3 percent screen-to-body ratio and 1.61 mm thick bezel.
According to Lei Jun, the screen design is even more successful than the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. The device, which includes a screen optimized for eye protection, detects the color temperature of the environment and offers a user-friendly panel.
The natural eye protection mode reduces harmful blue light without deteriorating the color values of the screen. This makes it less tiring on the eyes during long-term use. But the success of the Xiaomi 13 shows that there is still a market for devices with small screens.
