According to industry sources, Samsung Display is one of Apple’s main OLED suppliers for the iPhone 14 series. But according to a new report, Samsung will provide different quality OLED screens for different iPhone 14 models. Thus, it will help Apple reduce iPhone 14 production costs.
It was already speculated that Samsung Display would provide OLED panels for the four iPhone 14 models. However, the OLED technology used in every iPhone 14 model will not be exactly the same. According to industry sources quoted by The Elec, Samsung will use even lower quality materials than the previous generation OLED in lower-end iPhone 14 models. It will present its most advanced materials for the high-end iPhone 14 models.
In more technical terms, Samsung Display will supply Apple with OLED panels developed using the M11 and M12 material sets. The panels based on the M11 set have an LTPS back panel and will be used by the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 models.
Apple’s high-end iPhone 14 models (Pro and Pro Max) will use OLED panels with LTPO backplanes manufactured by Samsung Display using the new M12 material set. The same M12 material set is also said to be used for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.
In total, industry watchers estimate that Samsung Display will supply Apple with around 80 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14 series.
