2023 continues to be a difficult year especially for those working in the technology sector. According to Layoffs.fyi data, which tracks layoffs in the industry, hundreds of thousands of people have already been laid off in the past five months. Tech companies continue to layoffs, as fears of an impending recession and the US Federal Reserve keep interest rates high to fight inflation. The layoffs are expected to continue in the coming months.
200,000 employees laid off in the last 5 months
As the world returned to normal after the COVID-19 outbreak last year, big names in the tech industry such as Meta, Microsoft and Amazon started announcing their layoffs. Not only these giant companies, but also hundreds of small-scale enterprises made layoffs. It seems that 2023 will be a year when even more radical decisions are taken for the technology world. According to Layoffs.fyi data, approximately 200,000 people have been laid off in 2023. Microsoft gave signals for the coming months of 2023, originally in January of this year, when tech giants like Amazon, Google and Salesforce announced additional layoffs affecting workers globally. In addition, the developments in the field of artificial intelligence have come as a medicine to the technology world, which is already trying to reduce costs. Some companies have already decided to automate certain lines of business with artificial intelligence. Telecom, a major IT company in the UK, recently announced that it plans to cut its workforce by 55,000 over the next ten years, 10,000 of which will be replaced by artificial intelligence.
Taken together, around 360,000 employees have been laid off in the past year and a half, and there seems to be no sign that the situation will improve in the coming months. Difficult days will continue for technology workers.
